Let’s take you behind the scenes of how we crafted our Fantasy RPG Gathering Sound Pack, sharing the methodology we use in creating most of our sound packs.
From Concept to Creation
Every pack starts with an idea and lots of brainstorming. Creating a list and categorizing sounds is both fun and challenging, as it’s impossible to cover everything. Eventually, we come up with a guide—a printed sheet that outlines the types of resource sounds we want to create. This guide helps keep us focused during recording and design sessions, making sure each sound fits the theme.
The Joy of Field Work
Personally, I find resource gathering the most exciting part because it takes me out of the studio and into the field! During recording, we experiment with various setups, testing different placements and handling techniques to capture the best sounds. It’s amazing how small changes in positioning or technique can make a huge difference under the microphone.
Cleaning and Refining
After recording, we move to post-production. Raw audio is cleaned of any unwanted noise using iZotope RX8, which also helps us extract the best takes for the pack. Not every sound makes the cut—we select only those with a certain character, something I would want to hear in my own gameplay.
Smoothing and Balancing
Once we’ve selected the sounds, each is processed with fade-in and fade-out effects to prevent any unwanted clicks, and volumes are adjusted to a consistent level, ensuring clean, balanced sounds that developers can easily integrate into their projects. Additionally, we ensure that different variations of the same sound effect share the same start time, allowing them to sync seamlessly with game graphics in relation to each other, minimizing the need for further adjustments by developers.
Organization and Presentation
The final steps include renaming files and arranging them in a way that’s intuitive for developers to use. We also create SoundCloud previews to showcase how these sounds blend with background music, offering a real and detailed picture of what the pack can bring to a game.
This is the general process, but there’s so much more that goes on behind the scenes to bring these sounds to life. Our attention to these finer details is one of the reasons our customers often return for more, trusting that each pack is crafted with care and ready to enhance the player’s experience.
